ある日の新聞には、モンキーレンチで釘を打つことを試みている男性のイラストが掲載されていた。 英語の新聞だったので、書いてある文章のことはほとんどわからないけど、イラストだけは見ることができた。 モンキーレンチは、本来ナットを回すために設計されているため、打たれた釘は曲がっていた。 モンキーレンチと呼ばれるようになった由来を調べてみると、その一つに「万能性」があった。 イラストの隣には、ケーキが労働者の対比として描かれていた。万能の道具を用い、対比な状況を成立させることを試みる。

This work was inspired by an illustration in a newspaper. The newspaper depicted a man driving a nail with a monkey wrench. He was failing to drive a nail because a monkey wrench is a mismatched tool for driving a nail. One theory as to the origin of the monkey wrench being called a monkey wrench is that it was because a worker could use one wrench for a variety of situations. Also, in the text associated with the illustration, the cake was depicted as a metaphor for a company employee in contrast to the worker (wrench).

2022年12月19日のニューヨークタイムズから 着想を受け企画された2時間だけの展覧会「A Question to Your Answer・応答への疑問」に 出展した作品《A multi purpose tool》(2022) 。 この作品は、長い英文が理解困難な自分の能 力を踏まえ、主に1つのイラストを考察するこ とから制作を始めた。 そこでは、ケーキが資本の比喩として、モンキ ーレンチが労働者の比喩として扱われていた 。 しかしながら、モンキーレンチの名前の由来の 1つに万能性がある。この万能性をもとに、比喩されたものの対比を乗り越え、成立させるこ とを試みた。 本展では、この作品の映像記録をもとに、キュ レーターとアシスタントキュレーターの2人が 再制作を試みる。

A multi-purpose tool (2022) was exhibited in "A Question to Your Answer" , a two-hour exhibition inspired by the December 19, 2022 New York Times newspaper. I began this work by examining a single illustration in the newspaper, and consid- ered my difficulty to comprehend long English sentences as a primary inspiration. In the article, a cake was used as a metaphor for capital while in an illustration the monkey wrench was represented as workers. One of the origins of the monkey wrench's name is its versatility. Based on this versatility, I attempted to overcome and establish the contrast of what was being metaphorized. For this exhibition, the curator and assistant curator will attempt to re-create the work based on the video record of A multi-purpose tool (2022).
